Art Pieces 142-148

Extra Buttons, AP 143

I am thrilled to once again be able to share a small grouping of my finished 8”x10” stretched canvas art pieces. Included in today’s grouping is items 142 through 148. I had so much fun creating each of these small works of art. Hopefully you will find them as pleasing as I do.

Floating Stars, Art Piece # 142

A rich grey felt is the backdrop for this simple but interesting composition. Layered directly above is a rectangle of white cotton printed with floating black spheres. The floating images were the inspiration for this items title. The deep grey felt was secured to the canvas with both machine and hand stitches. Hand stitches are the only thing holding the white cotton in place.

Extra Buttons, Art Piece # 143

I enjoy finding scraps with unusual features. The focus of this composition is a synthetic fabric with two attached buttons. The presence of these buttons was the inspiration for art piece # 143’ss name. Beneath the section of synthetic fabric is a rectangle of teal wool woven in a houndstooth pattern. The wool was attached to the canvas frame with machine stitching. A hand applied running stitch secures the extra buttons and their companion fabric in place.

Belly Button, Art Piece # 144

Just the thought of adding an unusual name to one of my fiber art pieces makes me giggle. In this instance the hand made bead affixed near the center of this specimen reminded me of a belly button. That association between the two made me smile. This revelation inspired me to title this project Belly Button. The base of this item is a wool and synthetic coaster. Layered above is a reclaimed scrap of sari fabric and the unusual bead. The coaster was secured in place with machine stitching. The remaining components were attached by hand with Perle cotton thread.

Enjoy, Art Piece # 145

I like to scour my favorite craft stores looking for embellishments to add to my art projects. On one such occasion I stumbled across a grouping of large paper clips adorned with buttons. The clip attached to this item was one of the clips I purchased. Printed on the button is the word Enjoy. The presence of that word inspired me to title this composition Enjoy. Anchored in place with machine stitching is a wool and synthetic coaster. Attached above that are a variety of fabric scraps. The scraps along with the giant paperclip were secured with hand stitching.

Fancy Tie, Art Piece # 146

A rectangle of solid black wool is the base for this item. Layered on top is a remnant from one of my previous projects. The wool was adhered to the canvas frame with machine stitching. The reclaimed remnant was secured with a simply applied running stitch. In my vision of this art piece I see the black wool functioning as a black suit coat. The multi-colored fabric scraps remind me of a starched white dress shirt and a colorful tie. The image of the tie is what inspired me to name this small composition Fancy Tie.

Brown and Blue, Art Piece # 147

Names do not have to be complicated. The name of this item is a prime example. I chose to use the fabric colors as the inspiration for the title. Obviously included in this composition is the colors brown and blue. A multi-toned brown wool was layered with a solid black strip of fabric and a tiny triangle of soft blue cotton. The entire grouping was attached to the canvas with hand stitching using a Perle cotton thread.

Blue and Green, Art Piece # 148

Just as with the previous art piece the name for this project was inspired by the colors of the included fabrics. First to be secured to the canvas was a rectangle of deep grey felt. Running vertically above is a strip of blue and green check cotton fabric. Next to be attached was a two-tone blue cotton and finally a blue wool circle. All four items were hand stitched to the surface with Perle cotton thread.

Art Pieces 135-141

Dragonfly AP 139

One of the joys of maintaining my blog is the privilege of sharing news about my finished art pieces. My studio is full of plastic tubs, stacked one on top of the other, containing a plethora of completed projects. If I were to reveal all of them in one post the entry would be far too long to read. As a result I have decided to curb my enthusiasm by limiting this post to a small grouping.

Being revealed below is seven more finished art pieces. Please enjoy!

Blue Moon, Art Piece # 135

This item began with a layer of blue wool. Secured on top is a green, black, and red wool plaid. The final layer consists of a small circle of green wool. The blue wool was secured to an 8”x10” stretched canvas frame. The remaining features were hand stitched in place with a Perle cotton thread. I titled this art piece Blue Moon because the circle of wool gave the appearance of the moon rising over the landscape.

Blowing Kisses, Art Piece # 136

Attached to an 8”x10” stretched canvas frame is a layer of red wool. Intentionally place above is a rectangle of white on white cotton, a scrap of grey cotton, a white on black scrap and a grey and black cotton strip. The red wool was attached to the canvas with machine stitching. The other fabrics were hand stitched in place with Perle cotton thread. The shapes printed on the black fabric were the inspiration for the title given to this composition.

Sunset, Art Piece # 137

An 8”x10” stretched canvas frame serves as the base for this unusual item. This item was constructed from a square of soft blue wool, a smidge of white fabric adorned with black dots and a single red wool sphere. The light blue wool was secured in place with machine stitching. The remaining components were adhered with Perle cotton hand stitching. The stitching above the red circle emulates its shape. To the strip of white cotton I added black French knots. The red wool circle was the inspiration for this items title. I envisioned the red circle to be the sun setting in the evening.

Centipede, Art Piece # 138

A brown, tan and grey wool plaid has been topped off with a scrap of brown plaid. Situated above the brown wool is a harvested scrap of crocheted lace. To fasten the multi-colored wool in place I used machine stitching. The remaining items were secured with Perle cotton using a variety of decorative stitches. The fragment of crocheted lace reminded me of a centipede…thus the inspiration for this projects name. An 8”x10” stretched canvas frame is the base for my art piece.

Dragonfly, Art Piece # 139

The dragonfly bead attached near the center of this project was the inspiration for the name of this art piece. Beneath the bead is multiple layers of cotton and wool fabrics. The red wool was attached to an 8”x10” stretched canvas frame with machine stitching. The remaining features were hand stitched in place using Perle cotton thread.

frolic, Art Piece # 140

I love to search out embellishments for my art pieces. Attached to this one is a metal and paper charm stenciled with the word Frolic. The charm was the inspiration for the title of this project. Aside from the charm this item contains a bold green square of wool and a two-part remnant from a previous composition. The green wool was secured to an 8”x10” stretched canvas frame with machine stitching that echoes around the edges of the cotton remnant. The other elements were adhered with hand stitching using a running stitch.

All In One, Art Piece # 141

One of my favorite fabric purchases is those that contain text. Stretching across this item is a remnant from a previous project. Among the scraps that make up the strip is a small section of text fabric. Contained within the wording is the phrase All In One. The phrase was the inspiration for the title of this specimen. Secured to an 8”x10” stretched canvas frame is a fuchsia colored burlap, a solid soft grey cotton, a reclaimed piece of sari ribbon and the aforementioned fabric strip. The fuchsia burlap was attached to the canvas by machine. The remaining items were added via a variety of hand stitches.

Smooth Sailing

Not too long ago I shared plans to spend time sewing, shopping, and just having fun with a group of friends. Sadly my first full day has come and gone.

Almost all of my time was focused on my hand stitching pile of unfinished projects. Thankfully all of those items were finished. Take a look.

It feels so great to have crossed over that hurdle. Time to focus on other things!

Warm wishes to you!
